Nicola Verdon is a Reader in History at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. Her research interests focus on the British countryside in the 19th and 20th centuries and she has published widely on work and wages, including female and child labour on the land, female farmers, and poverty and rural standards of living. Her book Working the Land: A History of Farmworkers in England from 1850 to the Present Day is published by Palgrave in August.
