Friday 18 August 2017, 6-8pm
La Trobe Art Institute, 121 View Street, Bendigo.
You are cordially invited to a Public Lecture on the history of seasonal migrant workers in English agriculture by Dr Nicola Verdon of Sheffield Hallam University, UK (Visiting Fellow, Transforming Human Societies, La Trobe University). Given the current Australian situation in relation to seasonal rural workers this should be a highly topical paper, providing an important historical perspective on farm labour.
Nicola Verdon is Reader in History at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. Her research interests lie in the social and economic history of the British countryside in the 19th and 20th centuries with a focus on the agricultural worker, women farmers, and rural standards of living. She is the author of Rural Women Workers in Nineteenth-Century England (Boydell, 2002) and Working the Land: A History of the Farmworker in England from 1850 to the Present Day (Palgrave, 2017).
