CFA: Royal Geographical society-Wiley Digital Archive Research Fellowships

The Royal Geographical Society has recently partnered with Wiley on an extensive digitisation program of substantial parts of its pre-1945 Collections. Digitised materials are now available for research through the Wiley Digital Archives (WDA) platform.

RGS Collections contain over two million documents, maps, photographs, paintings, periodicals, artefacts and books, and span 500 years of geography, travel and exploration.

RGS are delighted to open applications for Wiley Digital Archive Research Fellowships. The Fellowships will provide successful researchers with six months’ access to the Wiley Digital Archives to pursue a focused research project. No funding is attached. As part of the conditions of access, successful applicants will be asked to keep a research diary, provide updates on their progress to RGS-IBG, and a short report at the end of the project. There will also be opportunities for sharing their findings with wider audiences. Please see the Terms and Conditions (DOC) for more information.

The deadline for applications is Monday 26 October 2020. A completed application form (DOC) and current CV should be returned to grants@rgs.org. Up to 10 WDA Research Fellowships will be awarded in this initial phase. Applications will be reviewed by a panel including representatives from RGS-IBG, the RAI and Wiley.

RGS can provide time-limited preliminary access to WDA to support the development of proposals. To request this, please contact us at grants@rgs.org with your name, affiliation, and broad area of interest.

RGS particularly welcome proposals that align with the Society’s current strategic priorities on:

  • Hidden and under-researched collections
  • The under-represented
  • Digital humanities and data science, particularly with a geospatial element.

RGS also encourage applications on topics beyond this. They will make awards to a range of projects and scholars at different career stages. You do not have to be currently affiliated to a HEI to apply. If you have any questions, please contact grants@rgs.org.
