The Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Environmental History Network is delighted to announce the creation of two prizes to recognise excellence in environmental history.

The Network is now calling for entries for the inaugural Public Environmental History Prize in 2022. The application deadline is 1 February 2022.
The Network’s Public Environmental History Prize will be awarded every two years from 2022 to recognise outstanding work in public engagement on topics in the environmental history of Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand (broadly conceived), including international perspectives that shed new light on the environmental history of Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand.
This prize seeks to recognise environmental historians’ leadership in public engagement and encourage researchers to build public engagement into their historical work from the ground up; and also to recognise public engagement with the field of environmental history. We welcome submissions that encompass a wide range of work in environmental history that engage the public through workshops, websites, audio-visual productions, popular publication, theatre or other forms of performance, visual arts collaboration, and mixed or multi-modal forms. This may be a single project or a collection of activities by a particular individual or team. Submission can be for individual or collective work.
Public Engagement activities must have been substantially undertaken in the two year period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2021. Applications are due on 1 February 2022, 11.59pm.
The award will be presented in the ‘Green Stream’ at the Australian Historical Association Conference in July 2022.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Public Environmental History Prize, you (or your team) need to:
- have undertaken outstanding work in public engagement on topics in the environmental history of Australia/Aotearoa New Zealand or containing international perspectives that shed significant new light on the environmental history of Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand. This might be a single significant public engagement or a series of public engagement activities.
Selection criteria
Engagement activities must:
- be based upon public engagement activities, which, in the opinion of the judges, constitutes a major contribution to furthering public engagement with the environmental history of Australia/Aotearoa New Zealand or containing international perspectives that significant shed new light on the environmental history of Australia and/or Aotearoa New Zealand.
- have been substantially undertaken during the two calendars years immediately prior to the first day of January of the year in which it is to be awarded.
- Specific criteria that judges will consider are: innovation in the environmental history of Australia/Aotearoa New Zealand; the nature of public engagement; and evidence of impact.
Application process
Individuals should:
- submit an online application form, including details of the public engagement activities and case for impact.
- email a digital copy in PDF format of supporting evidence (e.g. portfolio related to the submission) to alessandro.antonello@flinders.edu.au. This may include photographic or video/film imaging of the installation and/or event/s or web links to these.
- For very substantial book-length works of public history entrants are invited to send either an electronic version or a high quality print version to each of two the judges. Contact details available on request.
