AANZEHN Public Environmental History Prize 2024 winner announced!

Last night, at the AANZEHN’s annual gathering at the Australian Historical Association Conference, the Network’s Steering Committee was delighted to announce the winner of our 2024 Public Environmental History Prize: Jared Davidson for his book Blood and Dirt: Prison Labour and the Making of New Zealand.

As detailed in the judges’ citation, Blood and Dirt and its associated public talks and media interviews constitutes an outstanding work of public history. In this project, the judges note, Davidson achieves the kind of transformation of understanding that great histories aim for, leaving readers with new perspectives on the operation of the colonial project in Aotearoa.

Congratulations Jared!
