August Environmental History courses at WEA Sydney

History of Sydney’s Rivers
Thursday 16 August, 2018 6-7.30 pm $28

Sydney has some beautiful rivers – the Nepean-Hawkesbury, the Parramatta, the Lane Cove, the Georges, the Cooks River. The first peoples of the Sydney region were dependent on these rivers’ ecosystems. With the growth of Sydney since 1788 many of these rivers have been seriously polluted and degraded from farming, industry, land reclamation, urbanisation and mining. Learn about the history of Sydney’s rivers and why many continue to call for their protection and restoration.

Saving Sydney’s Wild Rivers

Thursday 30 August, 2018 6-7.30pm $28

Sydney is one of the few cities of the world that still has pristine, free flowing and healthy rivers – the Kowmung, Coxs, Nattai, Keduma, and Wollondilly. Learn why a proposal to raise the Warragamba Dam wall by fourteen metres will inundate and smother these rivers. Why are their calls for these internationally significant ecosystems, within the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, to continue to flow into the future?
