Roundtable: Australian Environmental History Today

On Tuesday 25th March at 7:30pm AEDT, several Australian environmental historians will participate in a roundtable for the European Society of Environmental History’s Environmental History Today series, entitled ‘Australian Environmental History Today’.

This roundtable discussion will bring together historians at various career stages to reflect on the current state of Australian environmental history. Participants will consider the major themes and debates shaping contemporary research, from Indigenous land management and colonial ecological transformations to climate history and urban environmental change.

The conversation will also address the challenges facing the discipline, including funding constraints, the pressures of public engagement, and the need for greater interdisciplinary collaboration. At the same time, the roundtable will highlight emerging opportunities, such as new digital research methods, expanding archives, and the increasing relevance of environmental history in policy and public discourse.

By bringing together established scholars and early-career researchers, this discussion will provide a valuable opportunity to take stock of where the field stands and to chart possible directions for its future.

Roundtable discussants include Harrison Croft (Monash University), Professor Emerita Heather Goodall (University of Technology Sydney), Professor Emeritus Tom Griffiths (Australian National University), Associate Professor Ruth Morgan (Australian National University) and Dr Jessica Urwin (University of Tasmania). This session will be chaired by Professor Andrea Gaynor (University of Western Australia).

This roundtable will be held online. For more information, and for the Zoom links to join this roundtable, please see here (and make sure you scroll down to the right event).

Please note, this event will be held on Tuesday 25th March 19:30-21:00 AEDT / 9:30-11:00 CET / 8:30-10:00 GMT.
