Inaugural Environmental History Journal Club – Report

The Network’s first ‘journal club’ meeting on 12 August was a fun and valuable experience for those who attended. We learned about some fascinating recent articles which had caught our attention, and we had a free-flowing conversation about them.

The attendees thought it would be valuable to share a list of the articles brought forward for discussion:

Adam Sundberg, “Translating Algae into Policy: Introduced Marine Pests and the Emergence of Australian Ballast Water Management, 1970-1990“, Environment and History (2025).

Loretta Ieng Tak Lou, “The Art of Unnoticing: Risk Perception and Contrived Ignorance in China”, American Ethnologist 49, no. 4 (2022): 580-94.

Rosalyn LaPier, “Land as Text: Reading the Land”, Environmental History 28, no. 1 (2023).

Heather F. Roller, “A Shared Toxic History”, The American Historical Review 125, no. 5 (2020): 1740-50.

Holly Fletcher, “Making Beds in Early Modern England: Sleep, Matter and Environmental Change”, Historical Research 97, no. 277 (2024): 307-28.

We aim to keep the ‘journal club’ as an ongoing activity for the Network so keep an eye out for our next invitation! All are welcome. In the meantime, enjoy reading some of the above articles.
